Same question. Different constraints.
I picked up the base 16GB / 256GB M6 mini and ran it against my 32GB M5 Air. The useful surprise is not that the desktop wins several tests. It is that the size of the gain changes dramatically with the job.

Clean runs: plugged in, not charging
This is an early look at two complete machines. One unit of each, different RAM capacities, cooling and OS versions. Most tests were run more than once, but no run distributions are published. Resolve is an older-run exception, detailed with its result.
Almost twice the Cyberpunk FPS.
41.6 versus 21.1 FPS in native Cyberpunk is the biggest practical change in this set. Both runs use the same 1080p High settings and monitor, with upscaling disabled. This is the native Mac game, unlike the older G14 video’s CrossOver Cyberpunk result.

CPU gains are smaller and uneven: Geekbench single-core rises about 5%, while the clean Cinebench multi-core result rises about 50%. The Air’s first multi-core pass overlapped other jobs, so the chart uses the clean rerun.
The mini gives substantially more headroom in this Cyberpunk test. That does not make it twice as fast at everything.
Reading faster is not writing faster.
Local AI splits into two distinct jobs. The M6 reads the prompt faster. Once it starts writing the answer, both machines produce about 23 tokens per second in this Qwen test.

| Local AI · writing the answer | 23.05 | 23.06 | Tokens per second. Same Qwen 3.5 9B 4-bit model and llama.cpp build. The 0.01-token/s difference is not evidence of a meaningful winner; the source provides no run-to-run uncertainty. |
For this model, the upgrade helps process the input. It does not give me a noticeably faster stream of answer text.
The extra performance has a power context.
The desktop has a larger power budget. During Cinebench multi-core, the reported whole-machine sensor readings were 44.6W for the mini and 21.6W for the Air.
Cinebench multi-core · sensor power
Reported whole-machine watts · Lower draw uses less instantaneous powermacOS sensor readings during Cinebench multi-core, not a wall-meter measurement. Power is not energy per completed task. A fan-cooled desktop and a fanless laptop operate under different constraints.

This comparison measures what the desktop delivers inside its own cooling and power budget. It does not isolate a chip-generation efficiency gain.
What I would—and wouldn’t—conclude yet.
The historical, confounded Resolve result of 92,723 versus 74,204 is not a clean buying comparison. The Air score comes from August 4 on Resolve 21.0, and a game download ran during the M6 test. The source labels this the Basic preset. I would repeat that pair under matched conditions before making it the basis of an editing purchase.
The memory question is still open too. Comparing a 16GB desktop with a 32GB laptop does not measure what a 24GB or 32GB M6 mini would do. More memory might help a capacity-constrained workload, but this video does not quantify that change.
The separate M6 versus RTX 4080 laptop article uses the later September 27 Resolve runs. Those are different machines and a different comparison; do not splice their results into this Air chart.
What would make this early verdict wrong?
- A matched rerun could move a noisy or background-work-sensitive result.
- Different macOS versions, a new game patch or another model configuration could change the gap.
- The Cyberpunk average could conceal pacing issues; there is no matching raw frame-time series in this article.
- A workload with different memory requirements could make the 16GB/32GB difference decisive.
The base mini is a convincing step up in this native gaming test and in multi-core work. It is not yet a blanket upgrade case for an M5 Air owner.

Which one would I choose?
For a desk setup and these CPU or native-gaming workloads, the mini gives me more headroom. If I need a screen, keyboard and battery in one device, the Air solves a different problem. I would not replace an Air solely to get faster answers from this Qwen model: reply speed was effectively tied.

Common questions
Is the M6 mini twice as fast as the M5 Air?
The native Cyberpunk average was almost twice as high in this test, but the other workloads did not scale the same way. Local-AI answer generation was effectively tied.
Does this settle whether I need more memory?
No. These are a 16GB desktop and a 32GB laptop. They do not isolate the effect of adding memory to the same Mac mini.
