M5 MacBook Air MOBA Gaming Test: Dota 2 and League of Legends on 24GB RAM
March 2026 · Mac Gaming Subscribe on YouTube — full runs, every machine tested. The Short Version
The M5 MacBook Air is not a gaming laptop in the usual sense, but MOBAs are exactly the kind of workload where it makes sense: competitive enough to care about frame pacing, light enough to run on integrated Apple Silicon, and sensitive to input feel.
In my testing, League of Legends was the easy win: the published run held its configured 60 FPS cap at High. Dota 2 was more complicated. Both the CrossOver/Windows run and native footage reached about 60 FPS, but at different settings and in different captures, so this is not an apples-to-apples speed comparison. CrossOver still felt better for my setup and muscle memory.
Benchmarks
M5 MacBook Air - MOBA FPS
Reconciled against the published HUD. These are separate captures with different settings; matching 60 FPS readings do not establish equal performance headroom.
Dota 2: Native vs CrossOver
Dota 2 is the interesting one because the native Mac client is not automatically the best-feeling option. On paper, native should be cleaner. In practice, I preferred the Windows version through CrossOver because the input feel and behavior matched what I expected from playing on Windows.
That does not mean everyone should run CrossOver first. If you are playing casually, start native because it is simpler. If the mouse feel, camera movement, or general responsiveness feels off, test CrossOver before assuming the MacBook Air is the problem.
League of Legends
League is much more straightforward. It runs well natively on Apple Silicon, and the M5 Air has enough GPU headroom for high settings while staying quiet. For a fanless laptop, that is the whole appeal: the machine is thin, silent, and still fast enough for the games most people actually play between work sessions.
Settings I Would Start With
- League of Legends: native client, high settings, cap FPS if you want steadier battery and thermals.
- Dota 2 native: high settings first, then lower shadows/effects if team fights stutter.
- Dota 2 CrossOver: use the Windows client if you care more about familiar input feel than having the simplest install.
- Battery mode: expect lower sustained performance. Plug in for ranked sessions.
Verdict
For MOBA players, the M5 MacBook Air makes more sense than expected. I would not buy it as a dedicated gaming machine, but if you already want a light Mac for work, school, or travel, Dota 2 and League are realistic games to keep installed.
