Cyberpunk 2077 on a MacBook in 2026: M5 Pro, M1 Max & M5 Air
June 2026 · Mac Gaming · M5 Pro · M1 Max · M5 AirDisclosure: I may earn a commission from the CrossOver or Parallels links in this guide, at no extra cost to you. For Cyberpunk specifically, the native macOS build is still my first recommendation.
Cyberpunk 2077 is the AAA stress test for Apple Silicon — a native macOS build, a CrossOver path, MetalFX upscaling, and FSR frame generation all in play. So how fast does it actually run, model by model? Here are the honest numbers, two surprises included: native macOS beats CrossOver for this game, and a fanless MacBook Air can run it at all.
Sourcing note: The M5 Pro and M1 Max figures below are community-verified—read from on-screen overlays in published benchmark videos, not from our own bench on those exact machines. The first-party M5 Air source is only a four-second gameplay clip. It supports a launch/spot-reading claim, not a sustained average or complete settings verdict.

| M5 MacBook Air (32GB, fanless) | Ray Tracing Low + DLSS, 2940×1912 | CrossOver (Windows build) | 10.1 | Measured · our test |
| M5 MacBook Air (32GB, fanless) | Low–Medium, scaled resolution | CrossOver / GPTK | ~32* | 4-second clip |
*The ~32 FPS figure is a four-second hands-on clip on lower settings — too short to publish as an average. The two 20.6 / 19.6 rows above replace it as the reference numbers: those are counter-logged runs from the game's own benchmark, captured August 2026 on a 32GB M5 MacBook Air with power and temperature sampled once a second. Surprise #1: Native macOS beats CrossOver here
This is the opposite of what we found for Dota 2 on Mac, where CrossOver's Windows client is the better experience. For Cyberpunk, the data leans the other way. On the M1 Max, the native macOS build averaged ~74 FPS while the CrossOver run averaged ~64 FPS — and the native run was at higher texture and crowd settings.
The reason: Cyberpunk's native macOS port is mature. It has a real Metal renderer, MetalFX upscaling, and FSR 3 frame generation built in. There's no Windows-shader-cache advantage to chase like there is in older or input-sensitive titles. For Cyberpunk specifically, start native — only reach for CrossOver if you need a Windows-only mod or a config the native build won't expose.
Surprise #2: Ray tracing is the cliff, not the chip
On the M5 Pro, the same machine swings from ~87 FPS to ~46 FPS purely on the ray-tracing setting. Performance config (Ultra, MetalFX Quality, RT off): ~87 average. Flip ray tracing to Psycho with RT reflections and shadows on: ~46 average. That ~47% hit is the single biggest lever you control. If you want a locked 60+, keep ray tracing off and let MetalFX + frame generation do the work.
On the fanless M5 Air, ray tracing is not a lever — it is a wall. We ran the Ray Tracing Low preset on it through CrossOver at 2940×1912 with DLSS on: 10.1 FPS average, and the worst one percent of frames averaged under 5, with a single 228 ms stall. That is not a playable configuration on this machine at any setting we would recommend.
To be precise about what that does and does not prove: the 10.1 run is not a controlled ray-tracing A/B against the 20.6 figure above — it is a different resolution, with DLSS on, through CrossOver rather than native. It is the answer to “can the Air do ray tracing at all” (barely), not a measurement of what ray tracing alone costs on this chip.
Cyberpunk 2077 on a MacBook Air: the first logged run
Everything above the M5 Air rows is community data. This part is ours, and it is the first time we have published Cyberpunk numbers from this machine that came out of the game’s own benchmark rather than a video clip.
Native macOS: 20.6 FPS. The same game as a Windows build inside CrossOver: 19.6 FPS. Matched resolution, matched settings, no upscaling and no frame generation on either side — both at High, 2560×1600 on a 32GB M5 MacBook Air.
That is close enough to call a tie, and there is a detail that makes it lean further toward CrossOver than the raw numbers suggest: the CrossOver run started 21 °C hotter than the native one. On a fanless laptop, starting temperature is the single most decisive variable we measured all week — the same machine scored 7,297 and then 12,624 on an identical benchmark twelve minutes apart, purely on how warm it was when the run began. The emulated run was handicapped and still landed within a frame.
But parity in frames is not parity in cost. Median frame time was identical — 49.9 ms on both — while the CrossOver bottle spent roughly twice the CPU and about 16% more power to land on the same number, and it stuttered where native did not. That is the translation tax, and it does not show up in an FPS average at all. It shows up in watts, and on a fanless machine watts turn into heat.
One thing Cyberpunk cannot do yet: CrossOver’s new ARM64 build — the one that replaces Apple’s Rosetta with CodeWeavers’ own translator — has no Direct3D 12 support, and Cyberpunk is a D3D12 title. So the comparison above is native versus Rosetta, not native versus the new ARM path. If you have read that CrossOver’s ARM64 preview is fast, that is true, and it is measured — but not for this game. The full ARM64 results are here.
What the M5 Air Can (and Can't) Do
The fanless M5 MacBook Air (32GB) is the machine we put hands on for Cyberpunk. Via CrossOver and Apple's Game Porting Toolkit, the public clip shows the game running around 32 FPS at one moment on conservative settings. Four seconds cannot establish a sustained result, so this remains a test lead rather than a finished benchmark.

RAM Matters More Than You Think
Cyberpunk is memory-hungry on Apple Silicon. One benchmarker explicitly flagged heavy swap usage and recommended 24GB+ of unified memory. The M1 Max numbers above are from a 64GB machine; our M5 Air test used 32GB. On a base 16GB Mac the GPU may keep up, but you'll feel the stutter from memory pressure — 16GB is the floor, not the target. If you're speccing a Mac for AAA titles like this, prioritize unified memory.
Which Mac for Cyberpunk?
- M1 Max — still a strong Cyberpunk machine: ~74 FPS native average at 1080p High with frame gen. Native over CrossOver. Community-verified.
- M5 MacBook Pro — the fastest tested here: ~87 FPS native with ray tracing off, ~46 with Psycho RT. Native macOS. Community-verified.
- M5 MacBook Air — playable on a fanless laptop at conservative settings via CrossOver/GPTK. The "can it even" machine. Our test.
- M1 MacBook Air — the weakest of the group for a path-traced AAA title; expect low settings and sub-playable results without aggressive upscaling. Treat as last resort.
Setup: Cyberpunk on Mac
Native (recommended): Buy Cyberpunk 2077 on Steam, install the macOS build, and enable MetalFX upscaling + FSR 3 frame generation in the graphics menu. Keep ray tracing off for high framerates. No compatibility layer needed.
CrossOver path (M5 Air / Windows-only configs):
- Install CrossOver (14-day trial available)
- Create a new bottle → Windows 10 64-bit, install GPTK
- Install Steam in the bottle, then Cyberpunk 2077
- Launch from CrossOver; set MetalFX + frame generation, low-medium on the Air
