Five years on, the M1 Max is the best used-market gaming Mac you can buy. We still test on our own 14-inch M1 Max — here's what it delivers in 2026 with native ports, GPTK, DLSS translation, and CrossOver.
Still legitimately capable — roughly laptop RTX 3060-class GPU with 32–64GB of unified memory and real fans. It runs Cyberpunk natively, takes DLSS/frame-gen pathways through GPTK, and its active cooling means it holds performance the fanless Airs can't. It misses out on Metal 4's newest Neural Engine tricks, but for owners there's no urgent upgrade case.
Nvidia DLSS and Frame Generation running on Apple Silicon through Game Porting Toolkit and CrossOver — tested on the 14-inch M1 Max. Also see the Cyberpunk 2077 native macOS benchmark on M1 Max.

HUD-verified by AI frame analysis of our M1 Max videos (June 2026) — not synthetic loops. Remaining ranges are community-verified and labeled. Active cooling means the M1 Max sustains these numbers in long sessions, unlike fanless Airs. Current-gen comparison: M5 MacBook Air numbers.
Three things keep it relevant: memory bandwidth (400GB/s feeds the GPU in ways no Air matches), unified memory headroom (32–64GB clears every RAM floor that locks out base Airs), and fans (minute-30 performance equals minute-1 performance). What it lacks is Metal 4's Neural Engine upscaling path that GPTK 4 leans on — newer chips get more free frames. Our full setup guide: How to play almost any PC game on a Mac.

Yes — roughly laptop RTX 3060-class with real cooling and big unified memory. It runs Cyberpunk natively and handles GPTK titles; it just doesn't get Metal 4's newest upscaling benefits.
Yes, natively — our in-game benchmark averaged 74 FPS at 1080p-class settings (59–99 range), and ~125 FPS with frame generation + MetalFX. HUD-verified from our videos.
Via GPTK's translation layer through CrossOver, DLSS and frame-gen code paths can run — we tested both on macOS 26. Watch the video above for real results.
New buyer: M5 generation. Current M1 Max owner: hold — you keep sustained-load performance the Air can't match. Compare on the M5 Air page.
